So, I get a call — two concepts. Easy, right? The first one is branding for a news program featuring Joshua Phillips. Think 60 Minutes, in depth reporting, yada yada. Phillips is the main draw. (OK, I don't know him from Adam - He's not Barbara Walters). The second set of concepts were for a documentary called Behind the Legend — cue the dramatic music. The subject was Obama but no additional information. No story brief. No synopsis. Very vague but I could run with that. I was flattered, of course. I mean, sure, I’ve done graphics for a few TV shows and posters for three previous films, but film — that’s where the real magic happens. Seriously, where’s my Oscar for Best Graphic Design? Just sayin’.
I dive in, whip up my concepts, and ship them off. No big deal, right? But here’s the twist: what I didn’t know at the time was that EpochTV — oh boy, let’s just say they’re a tad to the right of center. And when I say “a tad,” I mean so far right, they probably have a front-row seat at the next “alternative facts” rally. My ideas? Yeah... they weren’t exactly jiving with them. Turns out, they weren’t looking for an expose that might be, oh I don’t know, fair or positive about the 44th president. Imagine my surprise.
So, shocker — it didn’t land. My concepts? Well, they didn’t exactly hit the mark. I think it made their little heads spin and a couple people spit out coffee. But you know what? I liked them, so guess what? They’re going up on my website. Boom — here they are.
Would I work with them again? Nope. I like a good challenge, but they’re a bit too far out of my comfort zone... and I do cigarettes, pharma and liquors ads.
